From Ron:

I have been using the websites in my book for many years now. Even savvy travelers have never heard of many of these sites.

Let me start with airfare. There are several websites that I particularly like because they search thousands of published airfares to find the lowest prices. Qixo.com is one such site that claims it is the largest airfare search engine. If that is true then this is one you definitely want to know about. I found as much as a $40 price difference between various online sites going to the same destination on the same flight! Another one to compare is called Mobissimo.com that will also searches sites such as 1800cheapseats.com and CheapTickets.com.

Ron Stern has presented his Fly Cheap, Stay Cheap, Travel Cheap program on four separate occasions at the Harmony Library. When Ron did his first presentation here a few years ago, we had to turn people away. This year we were prepared for a large turnout. To no one’s surprise the room was filled to capacity, with 134 people in attendance. Because 60 people were turned away, Ron offered to repeat this program…His knowledge of Internet travel sites is unbelievable… he definitely keeps the audience “hanging on every word.” His presentations are filled with ways to save money on flights, cruises, hotels and just about anything else associated with travel.

FareAlert.net is one of those obscure online locations that you will want to know about. What is Farealert? Well, simply put, they let you know about airline pricing glitches. What is a glitch? It is a mistake. Do travel providers make mistakes? Yes, sometimes they do and if you have registered with FareAlert.net then you will be one of the few who hear about it.

What sorts of mistakes have occurred in the past? How about Los Angeles to the island paradise of Fiji for $51 plus taxes. Sound incredible? It is. Here are a couple of others:
R/T airfare to Singapore plus 4 nights in a hotel for $180.
Bali air and hotel for $0 plus taxes.

I know these sound incredible but they are true. Now the question I am always asked is "Do they have to honor these?" The answer is probably not, but do they? Fortunately, about 70% of the time, they do, which is good news for you and I.

In fact one of these mistakes ended up making it into the news a few years ago when a major hotel chain was being offered for $20 per night. There was controversy as to who could take advantage of this mistake depending upon when they booked it and the resulting confusion ended up in USA Today as an article.

One of the best ways to take advantage of special deals that you might find to overseas destinations is to use frequent flyer awards. Most of us receive these in the mail and simply toss them into the trash without even looking at them. I did the same thing until I happened to read one day and learned that they can be a goldmine of free or low-cost trips. In my talks I tell people how I got a free airfare literally for a $1 pack of gum, a $.15 Tootsie Roll pop and… believe it or not, a $0.01 mint patty!

AMAZING!

That's what I'm going to say about your presentation today. I knew a lot of websites while I was working with AA and most of the ones you mentioned today I didn't know about! I'm sure the moms will like the presentation too and that most of them are going to learn a lot from it too.

Read your offers carefully. Many will offer you enough bonus miles for a free domestic air ticket (or close to one). If the offer doesn’t specify that you have to spend a certain amount to obtain the miles then you can go to the store and spend at little as $0.01 in order to get these miles. I have done this many times and so can you.

By the way, the typical amount of miles needed on most airlines for a domestic award is 25,000 miles. But, Frontier Airlines offers one card (World Card) for an annual fee of just $49. And, the best part is that currently they are offering 15,000 miles for this which is enough for a round trip ticket wherever they fly. Is it worth it to spend $49 for a round trip ticket? Yes, in my opinion. If the price of a round trip ticket from Denver to LA is $240, then $49 has to be a better deal.

I want to send my regards to you in gratitude for your presentation here at our Flagship location. Your contribution had everyone busily scrambling for pen and paper to take notes on all the information you were dispensing of practical value for travelers.

I will tell you about another site in my book where you can learn about hotel pricing glitches for as little as $1 per night! There are many hotel search engine sites where you can find great, low-cost deals. HiHostels.com is one of those sites that incorporates bargain rooms in many parts of the world. However, unlike other hostels, this one buys up old castles and hotels, renovates them and they have an entire set of standards of how they operate. The end result is that many of their properties are places you would be very comfortable recommending to your friends and relatives.

Dear Ron,
Loved the class. I was so jazzed about what I learned last night, my mind was all over the place!

Other sites like Helpx.net offer free room and board for weeks or months at a time in exchange for some skill or service that you might have.

Caretaker.org is a paid publication but in each one of their issues they offer you up to 150 different opportunities around the world where you can stay for free. What sorts of accommodations are available? Glad you asked. How about castles, farms, ranches, estates and private islands.

Thank you for presenting your Fly Cheap, Stay Cheap, Travel Cheap at the Longmont Senior Center… I was impressed with the number of people it drew—I counted at least 145 people in the room. I know of several folks who have gone out to websites and used information you suggested.

My book has all this information and more. Newer websites are incorporating all sorts of neat technology and reader reviews to make it easier for you to find a great deal. Some of the newer ones that I like include Vayama.com, Vibeagent.com, and Venere.com.

While you are at it, try the very cool TvTrip.com. This one provides a virtual tour of your hotel (including the outside) so you can see what your hotel is really like!

Fly Cheap, Stay Cheap, Travel Cheap will also show you how to find a new or newer car to drive for free, how to obtain half-price Broadway show tickets, Where to find discount ticket booklets for the major attractions in a particular city and much more.
