I spent my early career in law enforcement and in the 80s I wrote my first book that was titled, Law Enforcement Careers — A Complete Guide from Application to Employment. I started my own publishing company called Lawman Press and published other books and reports dealing with various aspects of finding employment in the field of criminal justice.
After retiring in 1990 from law enforcement I moved my family out of smoggy LA to pristine Mt. Shasta, California. There I found that my children were sick all the time and my wife also suffered from serious health problems. Not satisfied with the progress (or lack of progress) of doctors, I started to investigate alternative health and nutritional supplements. My research not only led to a healing for my entire family but produced another series of books that included, The Immune Zone — Natural Alternatives to Achieve Optimal Health.
We ended up moving to Ft. Collins, Colorado where my interests turned to travel and travel writing. As with most newbie journalists, I started off slowly and then became a travel columnist for several news syndicates including the San Diego Community Newsgroup and the Women’s Newspaper Group. My freelance work has been published in Shape, Mobil Travel Guides, La Jolla Today, Voyaging and many others.
I served as the Media Coordinator for the North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) for five years and am also the Editor-in-Chief of JustSayGo.com, an online travel e-zine.
My love of travel has also led to various speaking and teaching opportunities. I have presented my most popular talk, Fly Cheap, Stay Cheap, Travel Cheap, to thousands of people at libraries, senior centers, banks, and the REI flagship store in Denver. I also teach classes on travel writing at Colorado Free University and Front Range Community College. My other passion is photography and I enjoy finding colorful subjects to capture with my lens. Above all, I enjoy spending time with my family, capturing compelling images and incorporating them into the stories that I share with my readers.
